Our story

The SightScent™ mapping system was created out of frustration! Our Peggy (14-year old Rough/Border Collie mix) has had greatly decreasing vision and hearing as she ages. We inherited 14-year old Alfie (Papillon/Maltese mix), who is similarly deteriorating. But it wasn't until our beloved Enzo (7-year old black Pug) went totally blind and deaf from SARDS within a few weeks that we really knew we had to do something.

Many of the tools used to assist blind dogs would not work for Enzo because of his contemporaneous deafness. It was heart wrenching to see him sit in the middle of a room with his head hung. Standing motionless for long periods of time with his tail uncurled, a sure sign of unhappiness. Robbed of his hearing and vision in the prime of his life, Enzo came to rely on his sense of smell.

The SightScent™ system of Bkinz™ was created through much research, trial and error in an effort to assist these family members.  Our other three dogs who do not have any deficits also approve! All three dogs have regained a sense of control and dignity in their lives. Enzo's tail is curled again! You know your pet best. Patience is key, and it is important to proceed at a pace that helps them succeed and build confidence.

How does SightScent™ work?

SightScent™ uses a clever system of scent markers to help blind or vision-impaired pets navigate their surroundings with ease. The product features three distinct scent blends:

  1. Earthy scent blend: Used to mark essential destinations like water bowls, food bowls, beds, crates, toys, and doors to the outside.

  2. Lemony scent blend: Designed to mark pathways and safe areas, allowing pets to travel confidently.

  3. Minty scent blend: Indicates locations or items that are off-limits or unsafe for your pet.

These scents are applied to Bkinz™ markers, which can be placed throughout your home. The markers are not pre-scented, so you can adjust the intensity based on your pet's needs. The scents are natural, non-toxic, and formulated to be distinct for pets while remaining subtle for humans.

The Need

The SightScent™ product was born out of a heartfelt need to help pets with vision and hearing impairments regain their independence. The creators were inspired by their own pets, including Enzo, a pug who lost both his sight and hearing due to SARDS. Traditional tools for blind pets weren't effective for Enzo, so they embarked on a journey of research, trial, and error to create a solution. The creators' dedication to improving the lives of pets and their families is evident in every aspect of SightScent™, from its thoughtful design to its empathetic approach. Each kit is still filled and packed by hand in North Carolina. 

Testing

Testing was conducted with pets facing similar challenges, and the results were transformative.

Enzo, for example, went from sitting motionless to confidently navigating his environment, even jumping off the couch with ease.

Since 2019, the system has also proved itself with thousands of satisfied customers and happier pets. 

Both cat and dog owners are happy for their disabled pets to have SightScent™ available to them.
